. firefighters are still on the scene of a duplex fire which started nearly 6 hours ago. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is there and anne, we understand this was a pretty complicated fire for the crews to fight. right? >> reporter: it was challenging because the homes are so close together here on bienvenue avenue in berkeley. they did just reopen the avenue so that's some good news but firefighters still on scene watching for any flare-ups this morning. the fire started just after midnight and check out these pictures posted online overnight on the daily cal website showing how intense that fire became. five people were living in a duplex. they all got out safely including a woman in a wheelchair who had to be helped out by police. four homes surrounding this one were also evacuated as a precaution. those people have been allowed back in except for the family of five that is homeless this morning. firefighters in the meantime are evaluating the damage. >> during the firefight, there was a collapse of the roof and second floor which resulted in us backing out of the building and fighting the fi

. >> this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, october 1, 2012. >>> good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning in afghanistan the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide attack that killed at least 14 people, including three nato service members. a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle rammed into a patrol. americans have a large presence there. nato is trying to sort out a weekend attack in afghanistan that left two americans dead. the casualties push the number of u.s. personnel killed in afghanistan to 2,000. the circumstances of saturday's violence remains unclear but a fire fight broke out at a checkpoint in eastern afghanistan. what nato hasn't determined so far was the gun battle a result of an insider attack or a deadly misunderstanding. drew levinson reports. >> reporter: this weekend marked the deadly milestone in afghanistan. 2,000 american soldiers killed since the war began nearly 11 years ago. it happened at a checkpoint in the eastern part of the country. one american soldier, an american contractor and three afghan soldiers were killed in a fire fight.

. an exclusive cbs 5 surveyusa poll of adults in california shows that 48% believe romney won compared with 34% for president obama. 18% felt there was no clear winner. last night's forum in colorado focused mainly on the economy and other domestic issues. that debate took place at the university of denver, colorado being a big swing state in this election, as well. the focus of the debate was the economy. but big bird somehow got into the dialogue there. and, of course, as we mentioned, there were some polls that showed that romney came out ahead of the president on that first debate. bigad shaban joins us live from denver with some highlights from last night. :00. firefighters are still on the scene of a duplex fire in berkeley which started nearly five hours ago. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec has been following this developing story. this is a complicated fire for the crews to fight. >> reporter: yes. and one of the large problems that they had to deal with overnight is that there are other homes so close by as you can see here. ben venue avenue is still closed down and will be for several hours after this fire in a duplex. five people lived in that building all of them were able to get out safely. but you can see how spectacular the fire was from some of these pictures we found on the website for the daily cal. the fire broke out just after midnight. of the five people that were in the home, one woman was in a wheelchair. she had to be helped out by police. but again, no injuries to report. homes around the building had to be evacuated because firefighters were afraid that this was going to spread. those people have since been allowed back in after part of the home that was initially the source of this fire collapsed. >> so during the firefight there

to approach them with a lot of skepticism. in ohio last week, we had cbs/"new york times" poll saying ten points for obama. and a columbus dispatch poll saying nine points. frank newport the head of the gallup organization had a blog posting that was revealing. he said you have to subject the state polls to the judgment of experience. he said for example, take ohio. the president won there by less than five points last time around. this time around, the poll that said he is winning by ten, does it make sense he would do twice as well, the margin is twice as big this time around than it was in 2008 when everybody is pointing to closer election than in 2008. of course not. it doesn't make sense. take this with the nevada and ohio shifts because of outlier polls. p.p.p. interestingly enough had a poll that was the outlier in nevada, plus nine for obama. then two polls in ohio. as a result they move it across the line from tossup to lean obama. i would say this, though. step back just a little bit and look at the arch since april. president obama has gone from 220 solid states, electoral coll
